While Pearl is very obviously not straight, where in the hell is she confirmed as a lesbian in canon? Has she, or her creators, verbally expressed that she is exclusively attracted to women because I don’t think so? I’m a gay guy who is literally wary of all men I’ve interacted with, does that somehow make me straight by this logic?
hmm maybe because of the fact she is only romantically invested ever in a woman that it is fucking obvious that she is a lesbian. men and women see men differently, and she literally does not like any man holy shit. every single man she is seen interacting with she has not liked. it’s almost like the fact she’s been only around women for most of her life to you gross ass lesbophobes means “she hasn’t found the right guy yet”

Here’s the thing, the Crewniverse never have stated her sexuality. What they have done, though, in addition to Rose and Amethyst teases, is draw her with men severaltimesbefore this, Rebecca actually referencing it in an interview. The Crewniverse, including Rebecca herself, are perfectly comfortable presenting this character in a multisexual context. Pearl is theircreation, not yours, they know her best, so don’t be surprised when fans take the Word Of God(dess) over angry accusations that frankly speak more loudly of your own issues than they do about the people you are attacking.
It seems popular to say these sketches here are somehow the reason this artist no longer works on the show. Yet the Crewniverse’s official blog not only reblogged it, but called it “awesomely cute” and tagged it #waifu.
They. Don’t. Care. Actually, they very much seem to ENJOY it. It’s almost as if maybe, just maybe, this character could actually be seen as that horrible b-word or p-word harassers like you vehemently try to push away like it was some plague. It’s almost like when Rebecca said “please pair everyone with everyone else”, she meant “please pair everyone with everyone else”.
So Pearl can definitely be interpreted this way with a solid basis in the Crewniverse’s own imaginations. You have zero ground to call it homophobia unless you’re willing to say Rebecca herself is homophobic too, because she dares portray her own character as something you personally disagree with.
No one is denying Pearl’s love of Rose, and outside of television network edits and one troll blog I haven’t seen anyone say she has to be straight because ew icky gayness. THAT would be homophobia. This is not. Did you know that bi people don’t always show equal interest in all genders 24/7? We don’t also lose our bi card if we fall in love.
Pearl now gets along just fine with Greg, and she became much more cordial to Mayor Dewey when he stopped being a puffed-up shmuck and sincerely thanked her for her help on the play. There have been no instances in this show where they have showcased this “EW MEN” attitude you claim she has.
By your logic, Rose was a lesbian who was “changed” by the right man. Now, there’s already been plenty of erasure of Rose’s relationship with Greg, but strangely few people in this vocal mob gives two shits about that. There are people dogpiling this poor artist–a bad fucking habit this fandom has gotten into–when they know ZERO about them personally. You’re willing to make terrible assumptions based on art that Rebecca Sugar herself enjoyed and that the Crewniverse promoted.
Bisexuals exist. Stop trying to deny us a freaking HEADCANON of a character’s UNCONFIRMED sexuality, especially when the creators have drawn it themselves. If you want to roll your eyes and tag #lesbophobia, go tag it to them, they are the ones in charge, they created this character, they own this character, and they freely chose to present her this way.

I’ve heard all those same tired “reasonings” against the ship in my original post. It’s why I used them. And just like the convenient comprehension of that example, you both once again just ignore the fact that there ARE LGBT+ who enjoy this ship for their own reasons, instead choosing to bully them as “straights” because that’s apparently simpler and more polarizing than accepting the reality that people do things differently than you. You are reading my OP as a jab at Vidalia shipping. Oh wait, except I ship/draw that too.
The point of that post was illustrating the hypocrisy of not practicing what you preach about strict adherence to canon when harassing someone over a ship.
I have yet to see an explanation of how a fandom ship impacts the canon show in any way, shape, or form. It’s fandom. If every ship on Tumblr is automatically destined to become canon simply by existing, we’re in for a long third season full of a lot of confusion and heartbreak. Except fandom does not have a bearing on whatever happens canonly in any way, shape or form.
There are no angry picket lines outside CN demanding Pearl and Mayor Dewey become canon.

She’s drawn Greg x Garnet, Greg x Opal, all for fun, the way shipping is supposed to be. And we’re both fans of Mayor Dewey’s VA/inspiration, Joel Hodgson.

Maybe, just maybe, you blacklist the ship name and leave people who see themselves in it to it. The tags are “Pewey” and “Pearl x Mayor Dewey”, most everyone is very good at tagging it.

you know what’s going to get you this sort of aggressive reactions? making a post… specifically meant to mock other lgbt fans who DON’T like pewey, and – even if unintentionally – giving off an impression of belittling queer fans as a whole for daring to actually care about seeing themselves represented in shows they love.

Oh, I know queer people can offend other queer people. There have been a gaggle of LGBT+ harassers in the Pearl x Mayor Dewey tags for days, telling the rest of us who are also LGBT+ that one of our ships magically renders us straight and homophobic and any other number of school-grade-bully insults. There are multiple hate blogs dedicated to trawling the ship tags in the name of defending Pearl against a headcanon, even though I’ve never seen Pearl x Mayor Dewey shippers stage a baby war like this. The shippers simply existing is the only reason the harassers need. They spam it with hate, full movie scripts, and memes.
They don’t care we are keeping to our little corner of the fandom. They don’t care if we tag it. They won’t just block our accounts. They want us to know we have no right to ship things they don’t like. They want to bully. They want to be sure anyone interested in checking out the tag has to get past them first. It’s nice you stay in your lane and don’t tag your ship hate, but a lot of people aren’t.
So, I find their aggression and their assumptions pretty offensive. like, there have been classier moves.
Yet the only thing you choose to call offensive is my reaction against the harassment. It’s not them, it’s my internalized bigotry!
That comic up there is a reaction to their bullying–it was only tagged pewey for that reason, even–yet you also chose to knee-jerk decide it was some bigot who demands Pearl be made heterosexual, and responded as such. The image isn’t “belittling as a whole”. The image very specifically shows someone directly harassing another person over a ship. Everything said by the harasser in the comic has been said by a harasser in the tags, usually more than once. If you aren’t being a dick to a shipper? The image is null and void and not aimed at you. If you are being a dick to a shipper? Then yeah, you’re going to have to tell me how you’re spamming that tag on the grounds of canon when you don’t adhere strictly to actual show canon only yourself. I used Vidalia and Amethyst as a recent example, but it goes for any ship if you choose to tag your hate. ANY ship. Ship haters are gonna have to be just a little more consistent if they want to wage a baby war.
You ship Pearl and Connie, you should understand shippers have extensive AUs to explain how their ships function. You interpret. You piece together a personal puzzle. I interpret Vidalia and Amethyst back in the day the same way as you do! But if someone else interprets the characters a different way, that’s their funky flow. I’m not going to raid their tags and make the fandom look worse than it already does, and unless they take a shit on my lawn, I count them as a fellow shipper friend.
You still haven’t provided an explanation of how Pearl x Mayor Dewey shipping is somehow negating anyone else’s shipping, or how any fandom shipping influences the show proper. I’m not surprised. No one ever has. But, spoiler alert: It doesn’t.
