Just a little collage I wanted to throw together, because as an artist, it really makes me sad whenever I hear someone dig in their heels against legitimate constructive critiques and declare “it’s my STYLE!”.
See the variety of various games/cartoons/comics I’ve mimicked up there? The only way I am able to do any of that is by practicing the rules of anatomy and perspective, by having a willingness to observe and absorb new ways of doing things, and most importantly, to know that there is always—always—room for improvement. It doesn’t matter that Wind Waker Link’s legs are only as long as his head. It doesn’t matter that Discord is a noodle, or Pinkie Pie can be a creepy giraffe. They all move by the same rules, and even stretch-and-squash requires you know how it would stretch and how it would squash from a basis in reality. It takes an understanding of those rules to effectively bend them. Without it, perhaps you’ll get lucky sometimes and it may look shiny, perhaps you’ll even see it in print, but at its core the lack of understanding will always show through.
Case in point. It used to be “How To Draw Comics The Marvel Way” was a nice little exercise, but I wouldn’t recommend that anymore. That’s a rant for another day, though.
Perspective and anatomy are not your enemies! They are your best buddies as an artist. Practicing them makes -everything- easier and faster once you get comfortable with them, and you’ll have the confidence of knowing you have a solid foundation to try tackling any subject you want. There is honestly far less frustration and far more satisfaction in practice than there is in that icky, awkward feeling when you dodge critique in a hit-or-miss stagnant “style”. Just look how many places I can go with just my level of understanding, and I have a long way to go!
So please, don’t limit yourself. “Your style” back in your crayon days is not “your style” now, so why stop there?
